A highlight is the splendid series of painted stained-glass windows (lots 165–170), the work of the De Matteis firm, which operated in Florence and Tuscany in the early 20th century.
Originating from a Liberty-style villa in Florence, owned by a prominent surgeon of the time, they were specially commissioned to decorate the study and other rooms of this prestigious residence.
The stained-glass windows are painted in the Neo-Renaissance style, with clear references to the paintings of Botticelli, Filippo Lippi and Domenico Ghirlandaio, and to the 15th- and 16th-century Florentine tradition, reinterpreted with a decorative sensibility typical of the early 20th century.
There is no shortage of elegant objects in the Grand Tour style, such as the collection of plaster casts of cameos (lot 192), by Bartolomeo and Pietro Paoletti, and the model of the St Peter’s Obelisk in various marbles (lot 191).
