In the private collection of origin the work was traditionally attributed to Bartolomeo Montagna.
We would like to thank Professor Mattia Vinco for proposing the present attribution to Nicola Giolfino, suggesting that it may be the same painting recorded by Saverio Dalla Rosa in the sacristy of the church of San Giovanni in Valle in Verona (S. Della Gatta, Catastico delle pitture e scolture esistenti nelle chiese e luoghi pubblici situati in Verona, [1803-1804], ed. by S. Marinelli and P. Rigoli, Verona 1996, p. 177). If it were indeed the same work, we would be dealing with a fragment, as Dalla Rosa describes "San Giovanni Evangelista fig. in piedi/ San Pietro simile di Nicola Giolfino".
