The painting is accompanied by an expertise by Ferdinando Bologna (a copy is available), dated 7 July 1966, which confirms the present attribution.
The scholar dates the work to around 1590, describing it "...fra i maggiori risultati di tutta l'opera del Palma, ma altresì dell'intera pittura veneziana allo scadere del secolo XVI; sicchè non credo di esagerare scrivendo anche che essa ha i caratteri di un dipinto miliare, da non aver potuto non costituire un punto di riferimento e orientamento per gli sviluppi successivi".
To support his assertion, the scholar compares it with Domenichino's Christ at the Column , dated 1603, which effectively reproduces Palma's same composition, as a demonstration of the importance this work had for painters of the following generation.
