Information
oil on round canvas
diameter 130 cm
This work dates to the artist's mature period, closer to the academic classicism of Domenichino. The subject recalls the famous Triumph of David , now in the Uffizi, which dates to a younger period, but differs in its less emphatic and dynamic composition, which emphasizes the biblical hero's calm and reflective pose. The girls, instead of abandoning themselves to a frenetic dance, advance in an orderly and elegant manner from the background, rhythmically marking the space. In the Uffizi there is also an autograph drawing by Spinelli, which can be related to this painting because of the arrangement of the female procession, which advances frontally and in a tight group, with one of the figures raising her right arm in the same manner to shake the bells.
