In both paintings, the twilight light is pierced at the center by the colors of flowers of every variety spill from an ancient and decorated vase. The large thistle leaf in the foreground lit by an intense shaft of light is in contrast to the area below, shrouded in darkness. This masterful play of light and shadow recalls the artist’s theatrical activity, to which he devoted himself entirely during the last thirty years of his life.
