Hernán Crespo's tenure at Lazio represents the culmination of the ambition of Cragnotti's presidency, which brought him to Rome in the summer of 2000 for the record sum of 110 billion lire. Arriving with the burden of replacing the great heroes of the recent Scudetto, "Il Valdanito" responded on the pitch with a simply sensational debut season. In the 2000-2001 season, Crespo demonstrated his predatory elegance, finishing Serie A's top scorer with 26 goals and confirming his position as one of the most complete centre-forwards in the world thanks to a repertoire of precise headers, perfect timing, and an innate ability to free himself from the opposition.
