A well-established fashion photographer, Bert Stern is best remembered for this famous photo shoot, which, as none of the participants could have predicted, would turn out to be Marilyn Monroe’s last. The location was the luxurious Hotel Bel-Air in Hollywood (where else?), and during the lengthy session, in which Stern is said to have taken over two thousand shots, he chose to use the square medium format to make the most of its compositional balance. In this image, as in others from the session, the expressive power lies in the contrast between the actress’s light skin and the vibrant red of the draped fabric. Contact
