Information
Vintage gelatin silver print
cm 25,6 x 20,5 (cm 24,2 x 19,3 picture) | 10 x 8 in. (9.5 x 7.5 in. picture)
The information on the back are interesting: the Topical Press London stamp, the signature attributing the shot to American Colony Photographers Jerusalem, and above all the typewritten note. It is, it is said, the only photograph, taken on the morning of December 9, 1917, where the mayor of Jerusalem, with walking stick and cigarette, accompanied by a group waving a white flag, meets the first British outpost, thus illustrating what is being called "a historic change of global interest." It marks the officialization by the British protectorate of the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent authorization for Jews to enter Palestinian territory, guaranteeing respect for the lands and religions existing there.
