Information
Florence, V. Batelli e figli, 1834. In 8°. With 72 numbered plates, engraved on copper and masterfully hand-colored, each accompanied by a caption, light foxing, a few leaves with light browning, contemporary half-leather binding, green leather label on the spine with gold title and decorations, minor defects.
Specialist Notes
Original edition, complete with 72 exquisite watercolor plates depicting as many flower species. Antonio Piccioli (S. Croce del Pino, 1794 - Florence, 1842) was a gardener-botanist at the Botanical Garden of Florence and a member of the Horticultural Society of London. The flowers selected for the Antotrofia were, in his opinion, the most beautiful, and the engraving was entrusted "to the care of distinguished artists," including Corsi. Brunet VI, Tab. 6487; Piesch 361; Sitwell & Blunt 125; Stafleu 7884.
