Specialist Notes
Wheler's account of his travels in Greece and the Levant with Spon first appeared in English in 1682. Jacob Spon (1647–1685) was a French physician and scholar who was among the first to take a systematic interest in Greek antiquities, contributing to the development of archaeological studies. His journey to the eastern Mediterranean in 1675–1676, published shortly thereafter, became a standard reference for European scholars of the time.
