The wedding banquet scene derives from one of the four panels belonging to a nuptial cassone that was at the center of a lively scholarly debate in the 1990s. The authenticity of the cassone—attributed by some to Ambrogio Lorenzetti—was contested by distinguished scholars, among them Federico Zeri, Luciano Bellosi, and Gianni Mazzoni.
