Puerto, pittore spagnolo valenciano, nel 1881 all’età di 29 anni giunse a Roma per rimanervi a lavorare per tutta la vita. Morto prematuramente nel 1906, all’età di 54 anni, è sepolto al cimitero Verano. Pittore noto come ritrattista ed illustratore per la Basilica di Assisi, fu da sempre legato alla Chiesa a cui fanno riferimento tutte le sue opere note in Italia. L’opera in questione dovrebbe essere stata eseguita tra il 1881, anno di arrivo del pittore spagnolo a Roma, e il 1888, anno in cui l’agostiniana scalza Suor Maria Josefa, da venerabile che era già dal 1838, fu proclamata beata da papa Leone XIII il 26 febbraio 1888.
