The model
Known as the "Italy’sweetheart", the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider has always represented the spirit of an era. Designed by Pinin Farina, the Giulietta Spider was a cool, young and elegant sports car. Given the failure of previous Alfa Romeo 1900 cabriolet versions (one hundred models made by Pinin Farina and two prototypes of the Touring Superleggera), Alfa Romeo was reluctant to propose an open version of the Giulietta. However, at the insistence of Max Hoffman, the ingenious importer of European cars in New York (thanks to whom many beautiful models saw the light of day: Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “gullwing”, the Lancia B24 Spider and the BMW 507 to name but a few) Alfa Romeo agreed to create the Giulietta Spider, especially since Hoffmann purchased the first block of 600 Giulietta Spiders produced, to be sold in America. To choose the design, Alfa Romeo commissioned Bertone and Pinin Farina to propose two cars suitable for production. After viewing the respective prototypes, they selected Pinin Farina's proposal, which had a more traditional line than Bertone's innovative one, but which had great impact on customers and was more appealing also for the northern European markets. The car was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1955 and, in its final version, at the Salone di Torino in 1956. The spider version of the Giulietta immediately took on the role of an icon as well as being a great commercial success. The new Spider was based on a shortened platform (18 cm less than the Sprint), the coupé version with which it shared the mechanics and the 1290 cc, 65 hp engine. Thanks to these technical characteristics the Spider guaranteed brilliant performance and a fun ride. The second series made its debut in 1959, featuring a more powerful 79 hp engine and a slightly longer platform, along with many modifications to details and, additionally, in the "Veloce" version. In 1961 the third series arrived, with some small changes to the lights and a slight modification of the shape of the rear fins. In 1962 the Giulietta range changed its name to Giulia; the Spider was fitted with the 1600 cc engine and was recognizable by the air intake on the hood designed to make room for the new engine. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider ended its career in 1965; being replaced the following year by the Alfa Romeo Spider, better known as the "Duetto". 17,096 units were produced, divided into three series of Giulietta Spider and 9,941 Giulia Spider.
The car
The car, chassis no. AR1495*000828*, was produced in 1956 and is one of the first series of the Giulietta Spider and is the last year of production with side-windows without quarter windows, typical of the first units. The car, sold new in the United States, was imported to Italy in 2010. The new owner, a former owner of an Alfa Romeo workshop located not far from the old Alfa Romeo factory in Arese, dedicated himself to the total restoration of the car which took five years. The car arrived from America in a deplorable general condition but almost complete; the few replacement parts used are original Alfa Romeo, including the engine pistons found at AFRA; restoration focused on the maintaining the“original” car. After some research, the Giulietta has been brought back to its original colour; for the stripping process instead of sandblasting an oven was used. The red interiors were still present on the Giulietta when it arrived in Italy, but they were in such an awful state that it was decided for a total restoration by a specialist who also took care of the soft top, rebuilding it to tailor-made.
