Specialist Notes

A masterpiece by Luigi Scrosati, the monumental canvas represents, to date, the greatest realization on the painter's favorite theme that is known. As recently written by Alessandro Oldani for the entry in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, the production of Scrosati – undisputed master in the genre of floral still life – must be divided into two distinct moments; that of the 1940s, with evident influences from the Lyon school and that after 1857, which features Hayezian and German accents of Biedermeier origin (A. Oldani, Scrosati, Luigi Ambrogio , in Biographical Dictionary of Italians, Rome, 2018, vol. 91). This triumph, which looks like a cross-section of the countryside with the still fresh flowers accidentally fallen from the wooden bucket and wicker basket, clearly demonstrates the skill achieved by Scrosati, capable of overcoming Hayez on this field, so much the flowers are rendered with a Titian sense of the color and the pink note sprinkled on the lower register gives a dreamlike tone to the whole.Even more touching is the human story that intertwines with that of the skilled painter, since starting from 1857 he was struck by a disease of the lower limbs, paralyzing him, which prevented him from continuing the equally copious production of decorator; however, this gave birth to a new painter, in fact, who proved to be unique in his genre.
