Information

Plinth base on four feet decorated with a neoclassical frieze featuring masks and plant motifs. Adonis standing leaning against a column decorated with bas-relief friezes depicting a chariot at the top and a wild boar at the bottom, which holds a circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals signed ‘Michelez R.St.Honorè n. 198’.

The iconography refers to the myth of Adonis, a young man of extraordinary beauty loved by the goddess Aphrodite. Adonis was brave and passionate about hunting but, despite Aphrodite's warnings, he decided to confront a boar, which mortally wounded him during the hunt. In many versions of the myth, the boar is actually Ares, the god of war, jealous of Aphrodite's love.
