TREATMENT OF GEMSTONES
Gemstones usually undergo treatments in order to improve their appearance. For example heat treatments that enhance color and transparency of rubies and sapphires and oils applied to emeralds are considered common treatments and are accepted by jewelry dealers. There are other methods such as the use of pigments, irradiance or coating etc. that according to the type of gem will contribute to their permanent alteration. The improve- ment of the characteristics changes the market value, therefore the estimates of precious stones, where not otherwise specified by a certificate issued by a credited gemological laboratory, are based on the hypothesis that precious stones may have been treated.
