Specialist Notes
First edition, now in its sixth printing, of this famous collection of children's poems, enriched by the beautiful illustrations of Helen Sewell.
A leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes (1901–1967) first gained recognition in 1921 with the publication of the poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" in the magazine The Crisis. His breakthrough came with the publication of the collection The Weary Blues (1926), in which he introduced rhythms and structures inspired by African-American music, particularly blues and jazz. In 1932, he published The Dream Keeper and Other Poems , a collection destined to become a classic of children's poetry. It celebrated the daily experience of the African-American community, encouraging new generations to pursue their aspirations despite the difficulties. Among the first African-American writers to make a stable living from their literary work , Hughes is considered one of the most influential voices in 20th-century American literature.
