In Amsterdam, chez Iacques Desbordes, 1738. 8th, artistic allegorical frontispiece and portrait of Voltaire engraved on copper, half-title pp. 399 + errata, with numerous figures and cartoons placed as headers and end caps n. t. and 7 plates, one of which is folded. all engraved on copper. Slight blooms. Contemporary full leather binding, title cords and gold decorations on the spine, some missing parts.
Specialist Notes
Very rare original edition. First state with the numbering error on page 271 (371). This is the work with which Voltaire disseminated Newton's scientific and philosophical ideas in France, including the theory of enlightenment, that of the world and metaphysics. For the accuracy of the analysis and the elegance of the engravings it is considered among the most fascinating scientific books of the 18th century.
