Official booklet of the State Ceremonial for the visit of Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli, elected Pope on March 2

1939) to His Majesty King Victor Emmanuel III at the Royal Quirinal Palace, which took place on 28 December 1939, Year XVII of the Fascist Era.

It measures approximately 205x255 mm, in good condition

The ivory cardboard cover bears, in blue, the coat of arms of the Royal House (crown with Savoy shield) and the text printed in elegant typographic characters: " HOUSE OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING AND EMPEROR / VISIT / OF / HIS HOLINESS POPE PIUS XII / TO / HIS MAJESTY THE KING OF ITALY AND ALBANIA EMPEROR OF ETHIOPIA /

The booklet is bound with a blue silk cord with a tassel.

Valeri, Grand Officer Professor Dr. Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi (Physician of His Holiness), Knight of the Grand Cross Augusto Milani, and Monsignor Riccardo Magnanensi. The "General Provisions" prescribe the evacuation of Piazza del Quirinale,

Via XXIV Maggio and Via della Dataria; the deployment of two battalions with flags and music in the courtyard of the Palace. The prescribed "uniforms" for those present are listed in detail.

Pius XII's visit to the Quirinal Palace in December 1939 was an event of exceptional political and religious significance: it occurred a few months after the outbreak of the Second World War (September 1939) and in the context of the troubled relationship between the Holy See and the Fascist regime. It was the last official papal visit to the Quirinal Palace before the end of the monarchy (1946). The Quirinal Palace, residence of the Kings of Italy from 1870 to 1946, is today the Palace of the President of the Republic.
