Information

Exceptional pair of silver cufflinks, with a central decoration depicting a greyhound's head hand-painted on enamel, preserved in their original leather or imitation leather case.

Inside the case, there is a handwritten autograph dedication in black ink, which says "To Giacomo Durini / Gabriele d'Annunzio "

The box measures approximately 90 x 60 mm, with a slight loss of leather at the bottom; each oval element of the cufflinks measures approximately 25 x 15 mm. The cufflinks are hallmarked 800 silver. In excellent condition, with perfect enamels.

The greyhound was d'Annunzio's quintessential animal symbol: the poet-seer was passionate about these elegant and swift racing dogs, which he associated with the values of nobility, speed, and beauty that permeate all his work. He owned dozens of them, even during the war and the epic battle of Fiume. Many of them are buried in the gardens of the Vittoriale degli Italiani, and d'Annunzio celebrates them in the poem " Here lie my dogs ."

Here lie my dogs
my useless dogs,
stupid and shameless,
always new and ancient,
faithful and unfaithful
to their lord Idleness,
not a man of no value to me.
They gnaw underground
in the endless darkness
the bones gnaw their bones,
they never stop gnawing their bones
emptied of medulla
and I could do it
Pan's fistula
like seven reeds
I could do without wax and without linen
make it into Pan's flute
if Pan is everything and
if death is everything.
Every man in the cradle
he sucks and drools his finger,
every man buried
he is the dog of his nothingness.
October 31, 1935

Gabriele D'Annunzio was a friend and regular visitor to the Milanese Society for Horse Hunting, chaired by Count Giacomo Durini between 1909 and 1910. The poet affectionately and with great esteem nicknamed him the "Wise King of the Moors"
