Information

Business card of General Nino Bixio with a commentary and handwritten signature by the General.

The business card is written on the front and back, and comes complete with its own shipping envelope.

The document therefore refers to the events of autumn 1870, immediately preceding or concurrent with the Breach of Porta Pia (20 September 1870), with which Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy.
On the envelope we find two different notes: " This document, which is very precious to me, bears a very important and historical date since on the 5th of September, or rather on the night between the 5th and the 6th, the illustrious General received the order to go to Orvieto and then move on to Rome, finally the capital of Italy " and a subsequent note written in pencil by the old owner: " Bixio wrote with his left hand after being prevented from doing so by a wound in a duel ".

The text written by Bixio himself is not easy to read: " GREENS AND THANKS MR. GUIDICINI (?) AND ASKED HIM TO ... % .. and worried ... Nino Bixio"

Nino Bixio was one of the absolute protagonists of the Risorgimento: Garibaldi's trusted lieutenant, he took part in the Expedition of the Thousand (1860), and was seriously wounded at Calatafimi and Milazzo. After the Unification he was a member of parliament and a senator.
He died in 1873 during a trading expedition to Asia.
