Specialist Notes

This is a very rare first edition of this well-known and important work, written by Galiani in collaboration with Bartolomeo Intieri, his friend and founder of the first chair of political economy, which was entrusted to Antonio Genovesi. While Galiani is known to have authored the work, the content, including the preface, is entirely Intieri's; some traces of the expository style, present in both the Discourse on the Usefulness of Science and the Perfect Conservation of Grain, suggest a coordination between the two authors. The work consists of an introduction and four chapters: the introduction expresses satisfaction with the improved living conditions of the people and the development of the arts, commerce, and agriculture; the subsequent chapters address, respectively: the imperfect methods of preserving grain in the past; the use of fire to protect it from insects without loss; the experiments conducted and those underway in Capua, France, and the Maremma; a description of the grain stove; and the difficulties encountered in overcoming prejudices against machinery. The book also describes Intieri's improvement to a tool used by lumberjacks, the palorcio, for transporting elevated loads, which could also be used to transport grain. The final chapter details the difficulties encountered in getting the Annona to accept the new machine. Finally, detailed drawings of the machine itself follow.
