Information

Florence, Stabilimento tipografico artistico Fabris, 1840. In 4°, 242 x 160 mm. 4 volumes. Text in a double-line frame, 500 woodcut vignettes “drawn and engraved by D. Fabris” in the text, the 1st volume is a “second original Italian edition”, the 2nd and 3rd belong to the “first original Italian edition”, slight marginal foxing, contemporary half-leather and sponged board binding.

Specialist Notes

A charming and clear edition on specially made gloss paper, published in instalments. It reproduces Borghi's "Arguments" and Paolo Costa's "Notes," which appear at the end of each Canto. The text follows Lombardi's edition; and the printing corrections were entrusted to P.J. Fraticelli. The vignettes, which are partly copies of the well-known works of Flaxman, Pinelli, Ademollo, etc., were drawn and engraved by Fabris, Balestrieri, Elisa Mariani, GB Biscarra, and others. The volume containing the Inferno begins with a discourse by P. Fraticelli on the first and principal allegory of the Poem.
