Information

silk
290x110mm
Ceremonial service band belonging to the Palatine Guard of Honour of His Holiness , a voluntary pontifical military corps established in 1850 by Pope Pius IX and solemnly dissolved in 1970 by Paul VI as part of the reform
of the Pontifical Guards following the Second Vatican Council.

The band is made of two-tone silk with four fabric lacing ribbons.
It measures approximately 290 x 110 mm. In excellent condition.

Band divided horizontally into two bands of equal height: one yellow with a central
the papal coat of arms (papal tiara with the crossed keys of St. Peter), a lower band of ivory white with the text printed in crimson red: " PALATINE GUARD OF HIS HOLINESS "
The reverse of the band is also two-tone, with the upper band pale green and the lower band yellow, without text or decorations. The colors on the reverse correspond to the body's own color scheme (different from the
yellow and white colors of the Holy See).

The Palatine Honor Guard escorted the Pope on solemn occasions and served in the Apostolic Palace and in the basilicas during general audiences and major liturgical ceremonies. Founded as a Roman lay militia.
guarding the Pope King, the Palatine Guard maintained its functions through the fall of the Papal States (1870) and the post-concordat period.
