Exceptional and extremely rare commemorative scarf produced on the occasion of the " Solemn Exposition of the Holy Shroud " (public exhibition) in May 1898 .
It was the first exhibition after 35 years and the first to be photographed – an event that changed the history of the Shroud forever.
The printed scarf bears, among others, the following inscriptions:
- " IMAGO SACRATISS. SINDONIS DNI CHRISTI " (Most sacred image of the Shroud of Our Lord Jesus Christ)
- " Quam Taurinenses in Sacrario Regis Religiose venerantur ab archetypo derivative" - " REMEMBRANCE OF THE SOLEMN EXTENSION HELD IN TURIN IN MAY 1898 "
- " Tuam Sindonem Veneramur Domine " (Lord, we venerate your Shroud)
In a simple original frame of the time, it measures approximately 750x410 mm, in fair condition.
The May 1898 exposition was extraordinary for one epochal reason: lawyer Secondo Pia obtained permission to photograph the Shroud , and in the darkroom on May 28, 1898, he discovered that the photographic negative revealed a positive image far more detailed than was visible to the naked eye—igniting centuries of scientific and theological debate. The commemorative jacquard fabrics produced for the 1898 exposition, made in textile factories in Turin and Piedmont, are today extraordinary documents of popular devotion and Italian religious history, extremely rare on the market.
