Mascagni's penultimate opera, Pinotta, is actually a youthful reworking of the cantata In Filanda, revived by the composer after 11 years of silence, during which Mascagni held the important position of vice president of the SIAE. According to an anecdote, Mascagni, one day opening an old suitcase, found the cantata In Filanda inside, thus deciding to rework it and stage it. Pinotta was successfully premiered at the Casino Municipale in Sanremo on March 23, 1932, with the composer conducting with Mafalda Favero (Pinotta).
