Letter handwritten and signed by Gabriele d'Annunzio on headed paper " CITTÀ DI FIUME / COMANDO ", dated Fiume, 26 September 1919 – just fourteen days after d'Annunzio's legendary entry into Fiume with his legionaries (12 September 1919).
The document consists of one sheet, two written pages, on the front
" My dear Lord, my gratitude has little value, but Fiume's gratitude is holy. It goes entirely to You and to Your Italian friends . "
on the back
" The Hon. Centurione agrees with Commander Rizzo to indicate the most urgent needs. Thank you. I shake your hand. Yours
Gabriele d'Annunzio. River: 26. IX. 1919 "
Sheet measures approximately 155x180 mm, in excellent condition
The "Commander Rizzo" mentioned is LUIGI RIZZO (1887-1951), the heroic torpedo boat commander who sank the Austrian battleship "Viribus Unitis" in 1918 and who was one of the pillars of the Fiume garrison.
The Fiume Enterprise (September 1919 – December 1920) was one of the most romantic and controversial episodes in Italian history: d'Annunzio marched on Fiume with about two thousand legionaries and established the so-called " Italian Regency of Carnaro" there.
