Information

The subject refers to an Orthodox liturgical feast celebrated on the first Friday after Easter. This iconographic type arose around the 16th century from a Marian invocation associated with a sanctuary built (and later rebuilt) in Constantinople between the 5th and 6th centuries, which still exists today.
According to tradition, the sanctuary originated as a small church erected by Emperor Leo I in honor of the Mother of God, following his discovery of a miraculous spring near the capital of the empire. The sanctuary was given the Greek name Zoodochos Pege, meaning “Life-Giving Spring”.
