Saint Nicholas is depicted holding an open book with a passage from the Gospel of Luke. At his sides appear Christ blessing and the Virgin of Pokrov, who holds the veil as a protection for the faithful.
Patron saint of Russia, Saint Nicholas is invoked as defender of children and protector of sailors, young maidens, pupils, fishermen, seafarers, pharmacists, lawyers, and merchants.
Born around AD 280 in Patara, Asia Minor, he became bishop of Myra in Lycia, where he died between 345 and 352. In 1087 his relics were translated to Bari, where they remain to this day.
