This attribution was made by Dr. Gail Solberg, based on color photographs, in a written communication. The scholar finds a comparison between the figure of Sant'Antonio Abate painted in the fragment offered here and that in the altarolo by Taddeo di Bartolo kept in Milan, Diocesan Museum.

The work was probably part of an altarolo for private devotion, a typology particularly widespread in Siena in the second half of the fourteenth century.

An alternative attribution has also been advanced to Bartolomeo Bulgarini (Siena 1300 ca. 1378), also a pupil of Pietro Lorenzetti.
