Specialist Notes

Robert Boyle (Lismore Castle 1621-London1691) Irish chemist and physicist was also a philosopher, naturalist and author of theological writings. An asteroid and a lunar crater are dedicated to him. His scientific work earned him an extraordinary fame in England and in the rest of Europe. Galileo's scholar, he applied his teachings to modern chemistry. He was an excellent and scrupulous experimenter and made a decisive contribution to the development of the experimental method by illustrating in his writings the criteria to be followed in experimental investigations. The law he enunciated relating to the inverse proportionality ratio between pressure and volume of a gas is famous. & Nbsp; Together with his assistant R.Hooke, he greatly perfected the pneumatic vacuum pump designed by Otto Guericke in 1654: a valuable tool for studying the properties of air and vacuum, which allowed him to carry out in-depth research on pneumatics for the first time in a systematic way. These experiments combined with the description of the vacuum pump converged in the present treatise.
